Abbasid period occupies a distinguished position in the history of Arabic language and literature. It observed profound political, social, intellectual, and cultural changes that modernized Arabic from a language primarily associated with the Qur’an, religious learning, tribal traditions, administration, and poetry into a highly developed medium of philosophy, science, theology, history, criticism, and belles-lettres. The establishment of Abbasid Caliphate and the transfer of the political Centre from Damascus to Baghdad created a cosmopolitan environment in Arabs, Persians, Christians, Jews, Turks, and other communities. This multicultural environment stimulated intellectual exchange and contributed significantly to the expansion of Arabic vocabulary, literary themes, genres, and styles. The period was particularly important for the systematic study of Arabic grammar, phonetics, morphology, lexicography, rhetoric, and literary criticism. Scholars laid foundations that continued to shape Arabic linguistic thought for centuries. The translation movement, especially under the Abbasid caliphs al-Manṣur, Harun al-Rashid, and al-Maʾmun, brought Greek, Persian, Indian, and Syriac intellectual traditions into Arabic. Arabic consequently became a major language of scientific and philosophical communication. This article studies the major factors behind the development and transformation of Arabic language and literature during the Abbasid period and evaluates the enduring significance of that transformation for Arabic intellectual and literary history.Downloads
